The flames of August

As the people of Karachi languish in the crucible of fear, the absurdly melodramatic press conference of the PPP’s Zulfiqar Mirza further stoked the potential for violence. Two days later a bomb blast in the city claimed more lives. In contrast the appeal of an obscure British-Pakistani restored sanity during the riots that ravaged England from Aug 6-10: “You lose your son and I can’t describe what it feels like to lose your son. I miss him deeply. A day from now, the whole world will forget and nobody will care. Please respect the grief of our family by staying away from trouble and not going out tonight,” pleaded Tariq Jahan after his son, Haroon, and two other young men also of Pakistani origin were killed. These words were as simple as they were powerful and soon afterwards the violence subsided. The writer and journalist Lee Stone said he was awed by what Tariq had said just hours after he had tried to save his 21-year-old son who lay dying on Dudley Road in Birmingham and then added: “Was it a coincidence that the madness petered out after these words? I don’t think so.” Tariq said on television that he tried but failed to revive the two other men through CPR but his son responded only to die a little later in hospital. The young man mumbled looking imploringly at his father that the end was near and the heartbroken Tariq replied “I’m sorry sonny, I could not save you” and then softly recited the kalima into his son’s ears. Haroon Jahan, Shazad Ali and Abdul Musavir were trying to protect community property when a vehicle which had just turned into the street rammed into them and then drove away at breakneck speed. The community was enraged and hungered for revenge but Tariq, despite his overpowering grief, appealed for calm. He reined in his emotions and said: “I have lost my son but I refuse to describe the tragedy as anything but an accident.

Evidential Faith: David Lamb: The Trinity at Nicea?

"The Oneness Pentecostals stress that God is absolutely one (Isa 44:6, 8, 24)—that is, one without distinction of persons. There are no distinctions in God’s eternal being, and the Godhead does not consist of three centers of consciousness (as some Trinitarians hold). Moreover, in Jesus dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily (Col 2:9)." (Oneness Pentecostal Confession. 9,34. 2007) I was recently made aware of the website and writings of David Lamb and in particular his critique of Oneness Pentecostalism (OP hereafter). He has written several lessons online where he attempts to deal with OP theology but primarily quotes from authors such as Robert Morey. In this blog post I will discuss some of what I have read of his online writings. I immediately recognized that Lamb is also a KJV Only advocate. The very first statement of belief on his website Basic Beliefs page indicates that he believes in, "1. The verbal inspiration of the King James Bible." Lamb offers nothing different here than men such as Peter Ruckman who also feels that the KJV translators of 1611 were divinely inspired. I have contacted Lamb via the contact page on his website and expressed an interest in debating him publicly concerning the Trinity. In the mean time, I will just point out a few of the errors he makes. For previous blog posts on the subject of KJV Only click here .  In the first paragraph of his first lesson on the "History of the Oneness Pentecostal Movement" Lamb quickly abandons use of logic. He attempts to cite sources properly but falls short here also. On Facebook Lamb claims to have studied at Master's Divinity School and if so he is the one that is disingenuous. I have nothing person against Lamb and respect him as a person but disagree with his conclusions. In one lesson he refers to my writings without proper citation.
