2012 volleyball to spike Halifax economy

Sporting events are small economic engines that offer short bursts of financial spinoffs and free advertising, and the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH junior world championships are no exception, says the president of Sports and Entertainment Atlantic.

Halifax will be the first city to host the international competition back to back, the sport’s governing body said Thursday.

The six-day event drew more than 14,000 spectators, had three consecutive sellouts and generated $2.6 million in economic spinoff when the 48 competing teams hit the beach volleyball courts at the temporary Sands at Salter waterfront site in September.

Derek Martin, president of Sports and Entertainment Atlantic, said that with much of the time-consuming and head-scratching logistics taken care of in the event’s inaugural year, the organizing committee can focus its attention on improving the site, striking up partnerships with local businesses, seeking corporate sponsorship and enhancing the overall experience for players and fans.

With its $750,000 operating budget, the 2011 tournament was a break-even endeavour; playing host again will help organizers spend smarter, Martin said Thursday.

“This is by no means a profitable venture, but with the opportunity to bring it back a second time, we can focus on attracting additional corporate sponsorship. Combine that with the chance to cutback on expenses and, hopefully, that gap grows.”

The additional preparation time also has Martin daydreaming about potential offshoots such as a concerts series at the site to utilize the top-notch sound and stereo equipment the event requires.

“The possibilities are out there,” Martin said.

“We’re talking about how we can better integrate with the downtown and with the retailers along the waterfront. We’ve had initial discussions with the I Love Local (Halifax) group and we really want to make it more inclusive for the whole city.
