Sunday Talk: Community Center re-emerges as non-profit health club
MCA originally and originally it was just a little gym building. In fact, originally, it was in another location on Franklin Street as I recall. There was a young man in town who headed it up, but then Earl Diaz came along and Earl really was popular amongst the business community. Earl was one of the leaders of north Lake Charles. He brought in a number of churches and also brought in white members on the board. We had a mixed board. It was fairly small and it was a gym with a few rooms on the side (established at its present location in 1973). It continued to be a Y throughout Earl’s reign. But Earl got Alzheimer’s and he had to retire. We had other people (run the YMCA). But we got to where we were having a tough time making ends meet. A north Lake Charles politician went to the mayor and asked if the city could help us out. Well, the mayor agreed that they would take over paying for our utilities and our phone. But they said we couldn’t have memberships and we can’t charge to use the facilities. That was the worst mistake that ever happened. We were only $5,000 in the hole and we could have raised the money. But when we lost our membership, we had a lot of loss of interest. People, when they are paying dues, they are going to show up. We had a lot of real successful programs going. I’m a good friend of Kip Texada, who has really turned that thing around them. He has really made that program successful. In talking to Kip, I realized they were charging people. So we put in a big thing to upgrade the place and buy equipment so we can get back to having a health club and we can open up to having members again. We have a lot of good programs going again. But we need to get people involved with their children and things like that and you can only do it with membership. Free things don’t keep growing. During summertime, the kids get to come in and they get breakfast and lunch. That’s through the city. The Original Health Club Step - News
