PRLog (Press Release) - Sep 07, 2010 - Las Vegas, NV – Emily Silver's walks along the boundaries of Las Vegas led to her suite of site-based paintings, Periphery, examining the precise moment where the city meets the desert. Imbued with a sense of geography, erosion, flow, sedimentation, and topography. Silver's mixed watermedia paintings illuminate the relationships between the physical, spiritual, and atmospheric essences of the land. Periphery (36 12’N x 115 19’W) will be on display in the Big Springs Gallery - September 18, 2010 – January 16, 2011, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. daily.
“Emily Silver’s work captures the aspects of sensory experiences where the urban environment meets the desert,” said Aaron Micallef, Springs Preserve Education Programs Supervisor. “Her abstractions overlaid with transparent maps present an organic flow of the manmade environment into the natural world.”
Periphery (36 12’N x 115 19’W) features 10 large-scale watercolor paintings that have been created by Silver specifically for the show at the Springs Preserve. Descended from geologists who participated in the mapping of the west, the artist’s numerous contemplative walks taken along the boundaries of Las Vegas over the past six months have blurred the boundaries of time and space. Inspired by the sights, sounds, thoughts and feelings these conscious walks have generated, her mystical, mesmerizing artwork provokes the viewer to examine their own views on the interplay of the lines between urban and natural landscapes, the connection of the finite and the infinite.
“My work embodies the simplest things: a tactile relationship with the earth through walking, and the ecstasy of losing myself in the process of painting,” said artist Emily Silver, “A visceral, historical, and spiritual connection with the desert informs my practice.
