2 remain in hospital after Sunday incident at Pacific Coast Producers
Two tomato cannery employees were still hospitalized Monday after a weekend gas leak caused breathing problems for at least 43 workers.A chlorine dioxide leak had been reported around 12:15 p.m. Sunday, leading to a 300-person evacuation and a brief hospital stay for dozens of employees at Pacific Coast Producers on 1376 Lemen Ave.
Three workers were kept overnight at Sacramento-area hospitals, company spokeswoman Mona Shulman said.
By Monday afternoon, one had been released and a second was scheduled to be released within hours. The company was awaiting an update on a third but will be covering all medical expenses, she said.
"We expect the people who were treated and released to be okay," Shulman said. "I'm sure some were told to follow up with their doctor," but the company had not received any information to suggest that its workers had suffered long-term damage.
Chlorine dioxide, a fungicide and algaecide, is used to clean and prepare tomatoes. Prolonged exposure can cause coughing, shortness of breath and bronchitis.
It was the second time the plant suffered a chlorine dioxide gas leak in four years -- though the two involve separate systems designed by separate companies, Shulman said.
The company has since shut off the malfunctioning machine and will only use it again if it passes an internal inspection, she said.
Officials from Yolo County Environmental Health services are also investigating the incident. In the meantime, plant staff have found ways to work around the shutdown, she said.
"It's a small system that was for a particular type of product, and we've found a secondary way to accomplish the sanitation purposes without using that system," she said.
A message left with the Yolo County Environmental Health Department was not immediately returned.

Students taken to hospital after possible gas leak | NewsLeak
A report in The Star relayed that a possible gas leak at a North Carolina school has sent several students to the hospital.
A class taking place in Katherine Harper Hall at Appalachian State University was evacuated on the morning of Thursday, September 1, after several students complained of nausea and other sicknesses. One student allegedly stood up during class and fainted. Soon after this occurred, the teacher dismissed the class and had the room evacuated, but not before two other students reportedly passed out.
Once the building was cleared, firefighters and local utility officials were called to the scene. According to reports, other classes were in session in the building and did not experience any similar symptoms.
The teacher explained to the news source that no chemicals were being used in his room and he did not smell any odors, so he was confused what caused the reactions.
The affected students were taken to Watauga Medical Center, where they were treated and later released.
No potential gas leak has been found yet. Other classes in the building have remained in session during the investigation, the report states.
