Fall sports preview: New coach brings new beginning for C-SC football team

Herald-Whig Sports Writer

With a 2-41 record over the past four seasons, there is nowhere to go but up for the Culver-Stockton College football program, and new head coach Jeff Duvendeck expects to lead the Wildcats out of the abyss.

Duvendeck, most recently an offensive assistant at Michigan State, took over the post on July 6. While history might have scared some potential candidates, Duvendeck saw plenty of positives.

"The opportunity to be a head coach was a big part of it. That and to be in a program where I felt we could recruit and that the administration was trying to push it in the right direction," said Duvendeck, whose team opens the season at home at 1:30 today against Graceland. "We have things in place so that we can have some success here."

Because of his late hire date, Duvendeck had to familiarize himself with the entire roster over the last couple of weeks, not just his freshman class. While learning their names, many returnees started with a clean slate, as Duvendeck and his assistants decided where they might fit best.

"You want to come in and make some changes, because obviously what has happened here in the past has not gotten it done," Duvendeck said. "Still, you don't want to make changes just to make them. That's why we had an evaluation process, and I didn't have any prejudgments."

C-SC averaged 14.7 points per game last year offensively. With varying looks, Duvendeck hopes to keep opposing defenses on their heels and put a lot more points on the scoreboard.

"We're a multiple pro offense, so we can go anywhere from two backs to two tight (ends) to five wide (receivers)," Duvendeck said. "Our offense will be based around how we can get our best players on the field, so if our fourth best player is our fourth best receiver, we'll have four receivers out there."

Senior Jake Harnacke, a starter in 2009, will return at quarterback after redshirting last season.

Life in Perth: uni courses, societies, travelling and other fun stuff ...

Wow – it’s hard to believe how fast five weeks can pass.really feel like I’ve become properly involved in university life. I’ve joined Perth’s International Society, The Arts Union, and I’ve played a 400 person strong game of tig themed around humans versus zombies. I’ve started surfing lessons and I’ve been improving on my kayaking skills on the Swan River. I’ve also finally settled on my courses and I’m starting to get to grips with the different IT systems that are used here. I’ve also been on a little road trip and seen wild kangaroos, possums and emus!

Let’s start with practical uni stuff first.

It took me a while to decide what courses I wanted to do as one of my pre-approved courses (part of your application process) wasn’t actually running, which meant I had to choose any two non-archaeology subjects from the huge range which was on offer. It seemed like a good opportunity for me to get to know a little bit more about Australia. The International Office give you a helpful list of Australian focus classes, but it is worth getting a hard copy of the unit list from the library and checking whether there’s anything else that suits you. A lot of exchange students are taking an Australian anthropology course; it seems to be a lot of fun and a good introduction to Aussie culture. I did take a course on Indigenous anthropology, but the class was a bit cliquey and the lecturer really didn’t run the course as an open and positive experience so I ended up switching it just before the deadline for penalty free swapping and I’m much happier now. I have heard that a lot of second year anthropology is hard to become a part of and the same is true of archaeology to some extent. The students have already formed tight groups and relationships with the staff which can be hard to deal with. For me, the difference with the anthropology was the arrogance that a lot of the students had; it’s not uncommon for a mature student to do one course per term in a subject and so end up with a huge range of knowledge about the subject and the staff and also enough time to really dedicate themselves to that one course. I don’t mind this situation, but I didn’t like feeling inferior because I was enrolled in a full course load and I didn’t already know everything about anthropology.
