Endowed chair honors Baptist leaders
Professor of Church History Bill J. Leonard was named the first James and Marilyn Dunn Chair in the School of Wake Forest University Baptist of Divinity. Created in honor of the Dunns, influential Baptist leaders for more than half a century, the chair positions of the School of Divinity as a leader in the ongoing conversation about the future of ministry in Baptist churches.
"The chair of studies focuses Baptist Baptist school heritage and allows us to exploit the strengths of this heritage for the education of leaders who will shape the present and the future of Baptist life," said said Gail R.O'Day, Dean of the School of Divinity.
Leonard, a scholar of the history of the Church and ordained Baptist minister, spent much of his career to the study of the Baptist church. He was the founding dean of the Wake Forest School of Divinity.

After retiring as dean in 2010, Leonard continued to teach church history in the Divinity School and the department of religion.
"The president of the University Dunn offers a concrete opportunity to celebrate their origins, even as it moves towards greater inclusion of religious diversity and identity," said Leonard. "In this position, particularly because it is named for the Dunns, I hope to be able to explore the progressive Baptist identity and role of conscience and dissent in the development of the relationship between faith and culture. "
Among the most recent books are Leonardo "Questions-Baptiste, Baptiste Answers" (Westminster / John Knox, 2009) and "Baptists in America" (Columbia University Press, 2005).Before joining the faculty at Samford University in 1992, he taught for nearly 20 years at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, he earned a BA from Texas Wesleyan College, a Master of Theology Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a doctorate from Boston University.
