It’s not news that The Avett Brothers have a loyal, enthusiastic following in the Charlotte area. Just go to a concert and ask fans how many shows they’ve been to.
One of the things that I appreciate most about their music is the honesty and self-reflection in their lyrics. Concepts like failure, selfishness, and dreams show up as recurring themes through their song list. So does faith – not in a dogmatic or preachy way, but in a frank way, an honest way.
For example, in “Me and God”: And I thank the Lord for the country land; Just like Paul I thank him for my hands; And I don’t know if my soul is safe; Sometimes I use curse words when I pray.
What some Avett Brothers fans may not know is that Scott Avett, from Concord, is also an accomplished visual artist. Even a quick look at the gallery of work on his website shows that he explores similar themes in his paintings.
On Monday, November 22nd, at 7pm, Scott Avett will be speaking at the Fall Colloquy, presented by the Center for Faith and the Arts, with support from Caniche and F&M Bank. The subject of the talk is “The Search for Truth in Art and Faith” and will take place at the Meroney Theater, 213 S. Main St. in Salisbury. Images of his paintings, some of which have not been shown publicly, will be part of the presentation, Please understand that this will be a talk on art, not a concert or a signing. Don’t expect to see him break out the banjo! So if you’re a fan of his tunes but not so interested in the influence of Tolstoy, and of his grandfather (a Methodist minister), on his artwork, this may not be something you’d enjoy.
A reception, provided by Cheerwine Bottling Company, will follow.
Tickets are just $20 and you can purchase online or by mailing a check to CFA, PO Box 4098, Salisbury, NC 28144. In either case email faithart@bellsouth.net to let them know your name, mailing address, phone number, and how many you ordered.
