Ike Dike: Where does project stand?

GALVESTON Bill Merrell remembers well the moment he thought of the dam Ike.

I got the idea when (Hurricane) Ike when I looked out the window to where I was staying on the second floor of a building on the shore, he said. I could see the devastation.

Merrell holds the presidency of George P. Mitchell Marine Science at Texas A & M University at Galveston. He was familiar with the dykes of the time spent in the Netherlands, where 60 percent of people live below sea level and massive structures are needed to keep the water during major storms.

North Sea storms are large, huge storms, he said. They're almost as bad as hurricanes when it comes to storm surges.

Merrells idea for the dam Ike involved extending the Galveston sea wall in the rest of the descent of the island and build another structure, similar to the Bolivar Peninsula. Then the doors through the huge rivers that remain open will be built for boats to travel, but swing off when a hurricane comes, keeping storm surges in the bay.

All we have to do is hold it for a few hours, he said.

If such a dam had been in force three years ago, Ike was a completely different story.

We wouldnt have had the death, Merrell said. We wouldnt have had devastation. Ike would have handled this thing quite easily.

Galveston County Judge Mark Henry is the president of Gulf Coast Community protection and recovery district, a coalition of six county that was formed to review options for storm surge suppression. He is impressed by the dikes in the Netherlands.

They are an engineering marvel and even a tourist attraction, he said.When they open and close for regular maintenance, many people come to watch.

Bay Area Sailing School - Kemah TX ??? - Cruisers & Sailing Forums

Im moving to TX here in June and am looking for a good place to get edjumacated. Any of you guys know of this school or any kind of info? Ill be up in Wichita Falls. I dont mind driving, according to mapquest its only like 7hrs to Kemah. From what I gather they also have other satellite schools such as somewhere around Dallas which would only be like 2.5 hrs instead of 7. I would go the distance to Kemah though if I would get a better experience. I know some of you guys are actually in/around Kemah. Any info and guidance would be VERY much appreciated. like I said Ill be getting there in June and depending on how things go I would like to start in July and if not July then definitely sometime in August.
