MetroPCS hopes to serve the phone market Pocket abandoned
As AT&T continues its fight to merge with T-Mobile, smaller regional telecommunications carriers aren't giving up the struggle to gain more market share against the giants.
MetroPCS Communications, which appeals to cell phone and Internet users who reject contracts and credit checks, is expanding in Connecticut and in Meriden and Wallingford.
Ali Aziz and his brother, Waleed, come from a family of MetroPCS dealers in southern Florida. The brothers migrated north once the company built new cell towers in the region.
"The market just opened up in the Connecticut and Boston areas," Waleed Aziz said.
Doing business as EZ Wireless, the Azizes leased space formerly occupied by the now defunct Pocket Wireless at 612 E. Main St. Meriden, in the same strip as The Lunch Box, and at 850-D S. Colony Road in Wallingford. They sell other products in both locations and accept most cell phone and utility bill payments at the counters.
A third MetroPCS dealer is on West Main Street in Meriden, that the outlet is not owned by the Aziz family, the brothers said.
"Our family owns six locations in South Florida," Aziz said. "We're not a pre-paid like Boost Mobile. We have our own cell towers. We offer a lot."
One of the biggest challenges since opening in July, the brothers said, is convincing customers that the company is not as vulnerable as Pocket Wireless. Pocket, which opened several stores, closed abruptly, abandoning its prepaid customers.
"With MetroPCS, the next location has to be a minimum of three miles away," Waleed Aziz said. "And we're publicly traded."
The company offers unlimited text, calls and Internet service for a flat fee ranging from $19 to $299.
Service plans begin at $40 and increase for more services. Basic service includes text, talk and Internet usage and the price increases as more services or lines are added. Under a recently signed deal between MetroPCS and music provider Rhapsody, unlimited music downloads can cost up to $60 per month.
