Editorial: The super failure of the supercommittee will prove costly

The supercommittee charged with calculating a way to save $1.2 trillion over the next decade proved to have no super power after all. Its attempt to begin addressing U.S. debt of $15 trillion has fizzled into failure.

The committee’s right wing was clipped to begin with. Even before “negotiations” began, House Speaker John Boehner warned his Republican colleagues that any tax increases would be unacceptable.

With those fetters in place, the supercommittee’s options were limited to cuts — the entitlement programs, such as Medicare and Social Security, and the social welfare initiatives that stand between the nearly 50 million Americans now living below the poverty line and complete destitution.

The supercommittee’s Democrats at least showed some backbone in standing up for the indigent and the powerless. Still, the Democrats did not compromise enough. The Republicans did not compromise at all.

There are a trillion details to the wonky work they undertook, but only two basic aspects to the solution: Raise taxes and/or cut costs.

Any combination of those components will involve sacrifice — on the part of Americans who will have to pay more and make do with less, and on the part of the lawmakers who sign their names to the politically risky remedy. Those legislators stand to enrage constituents and interest groups and quite likely lose their jobs.

Some moderate Republicans and Democrats had encouraged the supercommittee to retreat a bit from the ramrod ideology that has prevented progress. In the face of the negative reaction such bravery would have triggered, the moderates assured those on the committee they would stand as one.

That measure of unity may be even rarer than moderates these days. And it is something the country so desperately needs.

The revered “Greatest Generation,” those Americans who sacrificed with their blood and their ration cards to fight the threat of Hitler, dwindles every day. What they accomplished by putting aside differences and arguments in deference to the United States, the needs of the country and the greater good will never diminish.
