Coast Guard rescues couple, puppy 120 miles off Cape Mendocino
Within seven hours of what would stretch into a 10-day nightmare on the Pacific Ocean, Tas Kai and her fiancé Chuck Fleer knew they were in trouble.
On Aug. 24, Kai and Fleer, both of Tacoma, Wash., set sail on Fleer's 58-foot boat Gypsy Soul en route from Washington to Hawaii. The couple had a combined 40 years of sailing experience and plenty of supplies. They even brought along their 4-month-old black and white terrier, Sadie.
”We weren't worried,” said Kai, explaining that the couple had made the boat their home for the past four years. “We knew there was a storm brewing, but we were supposed to go around it.”
But the couple didn't go around the storm -- they went right through it.
Late Thursday night -- nine days after the Gypsy Soul launched -- the Humboldt County Coast Guard received what is believed to be the first mayday call from the boat, said Coast Guard Lt. Taylor Andrews.
The Coast Guard was not able to establish a location from the first call and the search was suspended until 4 a.m. Friday when a second mayday call came through, he said. Although the dispatcher recognized the voice as the same from the night before, the Coast Guard was again unable to establish a connection.
It was not until 7:30 a.m., Andrews explained, that Kai was able to get through to a dispatcher and explain the boat's location -- roughly 120 miles off Cape Mendocino.
By the time the distress call went through, the couple said they were simply struggling to survive.
”We were really at the mercy of the ocean at that point,” Fleer said. “Any hope we had of making it back on our own had been abandoned long ago.”
The couple had sailed into waves as tall as the boat was long and were battered by winds over 50 knots several days earlier. The Gypsy Sea had been damaged by the buffeting waves and was taking on water. An electrical fire had also broken out in the engine room.
