Old World Map Wall Hanging

Eastern Shore school columns: Sept. 2, 2011

Fairhope Interm.

Two weeks into the school year and the classes on the sixth-grade wing are very busy.

The entire sixth grade read and discussed "Old Yeller." Some classes are comparing and contrasting the novel and the movie. In math they have entered the amazing world of equations, and are delving into what an equal sign truly means. In social studies they took a virtual trip through the western frontier first as it was settled by prospectors, and then by ranchers and farmers. The students were saddened to learn of the loss of Native American tribes’ cultures and traditions, and empathized with the farmers as they struggled to hold on to their farmers during hard economic times.

Mrs. Cagle’s class is learning about powers and exponents, order of operations and algebraic expressions. They are using their online class on Moodle taking quizzes and using discussion forums.

Mrs. Wiles’ class is looking forward to their next novel, "No More Dead Dogs." Mrs. Wiles’ Sixth-grade class has also been having a great time in math. They have been working hard on algebraic expressions and solving equations. Every student can tell you the Golden Rule; do the same to both sides.

On the fifth grade wing in Mrs. Waselkov’s class, they are learning the parts of the microscope and how to focus a microscope. They are experimenting with roto-copters. They made bio-glyphs using their personal and family information. They are reading "Island of the Blue Dolphins." They have a new student teacher in the class, Katie Johnson, from Elberta, who is getting a teaching degree at the University of South Alabama.

Mrs. Stejskal’s class enjoyed making animal and plant cell models using cookies and other edible ingredients. The students enjoyed learning more about each other by writing Bio poems; they are now decorating the hall outside the classroom.
