Phillies schedule Saturday doubleheader with Marlins in anticipation of ...

The Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday became the first team to officially change their weekend schedule -- moving up Sunday's game against the storm-crossed Florida Marlins, choosing instead to play a day-night doubleheader Saturday before the full impact of the Hurricane Irene, likely to be felt Sunday on the upper East Coast.

The Boston Red Sox followed suit, announcing their Sunday home game against the Oakland A's will be played as part of a Saturday day-night doubleheader.

As the storm churns north in the Atlantic Ocean, other major league teams have, as of Thursday afternoon, taken a wait-and-see approach, although what to do in the event of a storm-affected weekend has been a topic of discussion.

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig says he "spent a lot of Wednesday" talking with Senior VP/Scheduling & Club Relations Katy Feeney regarding contingency plans for the weekend's major league schedule, MLB.com reported, as Hurricane Irene continued to churn in the Atlantic Ocean, moving closer to the United States.

"The weather reports are all different," Selig said, according to the website. "We'll see what path it takes. We are trying to make as many contingency plans as we can."

Irene could hit North Carolina's Outer Banks on Saturday afternoon with winds around 115 mph. It's predicted to chug up the East Coast, dumping rain from Virginia to New York City before a much-weakened form reaches land in Connecticut and beyond.
