When a good dance party gets better, what do you call it? Dancier? 50 percent more booty-shakable?For now let's just call it "more fun" and recognize that the second annual North Coast Music Festival looks to be even bigger than its inaugural, sold-out three-day bash in Union Park last year. In 2010, Chemical Brothers, Moby, Paul Van Dyk and Benny Benassi helped about 50,000 concertgoers sweat off any potential feelings of Chicago summer music fest overkill.
This weekend, the fest expects a crowd of 54,000 to 58,000 people. Among the more than 60 performers, David Guetta, Bassnectar, STS9, Fatboy Slim and a return trip for Benassi ensure feet won't be in one place for very long, and heads will have plenty of reason to nod with hip-hop acts like Latyrx and breakout rapper Wiz Khalifa. More than 20 after-parties at venues like the Mid, Congress Theater and Bottom Lounge will keep them moving all night.
Fest organizers this year made a conscious effort to dial down the event's previous jam band-ness—Umphrey's McGee won't be back—and more strongly emphasize electronic acts and DJs, says NCMF press and social media director Amy Ravit Korin, who notes the increased popularity of the Perry's Stage at Lollapalooza as a sign of electronic music's growing influence.
North Coast also has stacked the undercard this year. Save for Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Maps and Atlases, the first North Coast fest was light on great acts to catch during the day. This year offers solid options like Soul Rebels Brass Band, Budos Band, The Hood Internet, Little Dragon, Pyro Fighter and more, not to mention early evening sets from Common and Of Montreal.
And you may as well mark your calendar for around this time next year, since it doesn't seem like North Coast is going away anytime soon. At least, we hope not.

On the eve of "Summers Last Stand" we give you our top ten acts not to miss this weekend at the North Coast Music Festival. Now in it's second year the eclectic mix of electronic heavyweights, conscience MC's, and genre expanding acts will once again touch down on Union Park. STS9's Saturday set is one of the most highly anticipated sets of the weekend. The all instrumentation band combines perfectly, organic and electronic elements to create something 100% original. With headliners only being awarded with 90min. of playing time expect a clean tight set that will bend the genre of electronic music. Expanding on multiple genres from jazz to funk and rock, Lotus continue to defy the traditional aspects of electronic music. Gravitating towards electronic music seemed to be an organic transition for the band, but they have always stayed rooted in rock and roll. Guitar, and percussion are at the foundation of the band lead by Mike Rempel/Luke Miller - but standout lyricists of the weekend just might be hometown heroes BBU. The Hip Hop Trio has been a secret to know one following the Chicago underground. Combining dance floor ready beats with social-concise undertones BBU will be throwing thier own house party Saturday afternoon whether you want to hear their voices or not.
