Residents of the 400 block of West Columbia Avenue recognized the efforts of the Pomona Police Department, and Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel serving Pomona along with of other city employees and elected officials this week.

Residents, through their Neighborhood Watch group, made arrangements to close their street Tuesday evening and turned it into one very big family dining room where they provided dinner for public safety personnel and others.

Residents of the street have worked for many years to keep their neighborhood safe, said Kim Johnson, co-captain of the street's Neighborhood Watch group.

"When do the police in the city and crime prevention (personnel) get thanks?" Johnson said. "This was our way of saying thanks."

Over the years officers and members of the department's crime prevention unit have worked with residents any time they've had concerns and has become more of a partnership, which leads to resolving concerns, Johnson said.

The evening was a pleasant one for the honorees and for the residents as well as a visitors from other neighborhoods, she said. New residents of the neighborhood had a chance to get to know their new neighbors, Johnson said.

New Humane Society van will benefit organization

The Inland Valley Humane Society and SPCA has a new vehicle in its fleet.

The large van is decorated with large decals depicting pets, some sporting cool sunglasses or listing to their favorite tunes using earphones.

A look inside the vehicle reveals a kennels on wheels, and "is the first of its kind in Southern California," said Bill Harford, president and chief executive officer of the Inland Valley Humane Society and SPCA.

The air conditioned van equipped with stainless steel kennels can hold 25 small animals and 15 mid-sized animals, Harford said. Kennels can also be adapted to hold larger animals.

Cruise Nights return to NHRA Museum in Pomona - Pomona Now

Visitors can tour the museum, enter their own vehicles in competition, participate in drawings and other activities.

The free events take place every first Wednesday of the month, from 4 to 8 p.m., beginning April 6.

Two cruise nights have been scheduled for August.

No cruise night will be scheduled in September when the L.A.
