Cost sharing with Ministry of Transportation - Londoner - Ontario, CA

The rehabilitation of Melbourne Road from County Road 2 (Longwoods) has been deferred to a future year.

The Ministry of Transportation has scheduled the reconstruction of Highway 7 from Prospect Hill Road in Thames Centre through to Stratford for the summer and fall of 2011 and has approached Middlesex County with a cost sharing agreement.

Through the agreement, which was approved by Middlesex County Council at their meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 22, the MTO will contribute $500,000 of the total cost of the rehabilitation work. The ­estimated cost of the project is $1,620,000.

In his report, Middlesex County Engineer Chris Traini wrote that the county would be unlikely to get an offer of this nature from the MTO other than in this case, where it is on the table due to the ministry's plan to use county roads to benefit their construction project.

The MTO's plan outlines a detour route for the Highway 7 closure on County Roads 27 (Wellburn Road), 16 (Plover Mills Road) and 23 (Highbury Avenue North). Both County Road 27 and 16 are due for rehabilitation and are currently not sufficient for the truck traffic that would result from the detour.

"They have been on our timetable (for ­rehabilitation) for several years," Traini said.

The project is expected to start in July and be underway until the end of 2011.

Middlesex County will still perform improvements on the Middlemiss Bridge this year, but the rehabilitation of the road will likely take place in 2012.
