Antlerless deer licenses still available

The season purchase limit for private-land antlerless deer licenses has increased to five statewide, except for DMU 486 (nearly all of southern Lower Michigan, including Midland County) and DMU 487 (the so-called Bovine Tuberculosis area in northeastern Lower Michigan), which have no season limit.

License availability may be viewed at www.michigan.gov/huntdrawings . Licenses will be sold until quotas are met.

Costlier snowmobile tags

Don't expect Michigan snowmobilers to complain about an increase in trail permit fees this year; organized snowmobilers asked for it.

The price this year is $45, an increase of $10 from last year, and will stay at that level through the 2015 snowmobile season.

The fees support maintenance and grooming of the state's snowmobile trail network. The DNR provides grants to local snowmobile trail partners, who are responsible for the grooming and maintenance of the trails.

Said Jim Radabaugh, section manager for the DNR's Recreation and Trails Program, in a news release, "It is because of our partnership with 68 snowmobile trail sponsors that Michigan is able to offer over 6,400 miles of designated, groomed and signed trails."

Michigan has

winning state parks

Michigan state parks and recreation areas won the 2011 National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Gold Medal, from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration and NRPA, as the top state park system in the nation.

Michigan was named one of four finalists in May, and beat North Carolina, Florida and Missouri for the top honor.

In its winning application, the DNR focused on innovation, such as the Recreation Passport, which is the new funding model for state parks and outdoor recreation in Michigan.

Michigan residents can choose to pay a $10 fee when renewing their vehicle registration at the Secretary of State, giving them annual access to all Michigan state parks and boating access sites, and supporting state forest recreation programs. A portion of the funding also supports a grant program for local parks.
