Left Hemisphere Of The Brain

Never giving up on hope

The surgery was completed Nov. 23, 2010. It was discovered by the surgical team, that most of the left hemisphere of Evan Stauff’s brain had not developed while he was in the womb, and it was removed. At the time of surgery, Evan Stauff was 10 months old. His recovery took a few weeks, but the Stauffs were back in Idaho by December 2010, to spend Christmas with family. Evan has limited function on the right side of his body, because the left hemisphere of his brain is gone. He has loss of vision of the right half of each eye, but David Stauff said Evan Stauff manages to compensate very well. David Stauff is a full-time, stay-at-home dad. He tries to take advantage of every opportunity for Evan Stauff to learn or do tasks. To donate to Evan, visit the Stauffs’ website ( http://www.evanstauff.com ) at the bottom of the home page there is a donate link that uses PayPal, or visit any U.S. Bank branch and ask to make a donation to the Evan Stauff Donation account. You can keep up with the Stauffs, and what’s happening today with them through the website.

Stammering – Is it Due to Brain Dysfunction? | Familie Kontoret

Science has not yet developed a concrete cause for stammering. Various theories and research findings point to genetic disorders, brain dysfunctions, parental behavior and environmental factors. The magnitude of stammering among people widely differs from simple childhood vocal changes to complex adult speech disorders. It is established that stammering is not a physical disorder. The tongue, jaw or pharynx has no connection with stammering. The theory that parent behavior may cause stammering in child also finds no exact relevance because not all children subjected to parental misbehavior later developed stammering. In humans, speech is produced as a result of a coordinated effort of muscles and brain. Breathing and articulation using the tongue, jaw, lips and teeth are involved in a normal speech. When speaking, an individual takes breath and the vocal codes in the voice box come together. The air in the lungs is passed by the vocal codes, the vibration of which results in speech. The sound is altered by tongue, nose, and lips to form the various words. According to scientists, the right hemisphere of brain is concerned with the emotions and left hemisphere with speech. The stammerers’ right hemisphere of brain shows more activities than the left hemisphere. On some stammerers the study gave just opposite results. Their right hemisphere show less activities and left hemisphere show more activities which give the conclusion that speech activities overtake the emotional activities in non stammerers. It is not established that the stammerer’s left hemisphere of brain has any dysfunction genetically or otherwise to show less speech activities.
