Movies on Market Square will kick off Sept. 9

It's time to grab your lawn chairs and settle in to watch a movie under the stars in downtown Knoxville!

Knox County Public Library's popular Movies on Market Square will kick off its ninth year on September 9.  And this year, the event has gone to the dogs!

The library has teamed up wth PetSafe for free family and pet friendly activities.

To pick the line up, thousands of people cast their vote for movies in six categories, with Lady and the Tramp being the only landslide winner, taking the Hollywood Hounds category by 46% out of six options. The other categories held very tight races.

And the winners are: 10/14 - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (PG - 2009)

All movies are rated PG-13 or less, but parents are encouraged to check out the films to make sure they are right for their family. The series will run for six Friday nights, from September 9 through October 14.

Pre-show activities will feature pet tips and advice, as well as an array of four-legged festivities sure to please even the most sophisticated Fido. The furry fun will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the movies begin at dusk. Of course, all pets must be very well behaved, and all city rules regarding pets must be observed.

Each year, the Library puts on Movies on Market Square to highlight its vast collection of film and music. Audiovisual items now account for just over half of all circulating items at Lawson McGhee Library. Last year, over 454,000 DVDs, CDs, and audio books were checked out throughout the county.

NEW THIS YEAR - Fun and furry contests:

The 2011 Book and Dog Lovers Song Contest - Creative folks are invited to write and perform an original song on video that features a love of both books and dogs. Submissions will be accepted at www.knoxlib.org starting Sept 9, and the winning entry will receive a prize pack from PetSafe. The top three finalists will be shown at the final Movies on Market Square.
