The old lightning-struck tree stood nestled in the Sierra Mountains when Rick Schneck saw it during a backpacking trip in 2009.

A photograph of that tree inspired Schneck to recreate the image with a new hobby — art quilting. After he did, he won first place at a local quilting competition, and now he's on his way to a national awards ceremony for winning gold.

"I followed the inspiration of that picture into my first art quilt," Schneck said about his quilt "I Am Still Here."

He paints pictures with fabric instead of using the standard geometric design seen in quilting, he said.

Matching fabric patterns and colors to the tree photograph and assembling the quilt captivated Schneck's attention for hours.

First, he cuts strips of fabric, mimicking the trees texture, into pieces similar to that on the original tree. The pieces are glued together to recreate the scenery of the photo. With a colored fabric pen, Schneck adds in intricate details that can't be depicted with fabric, such as tree hollows and leaf veins.

Schneck said he can spend hours getting lost in the creative process, which takes place on his kitchen island.

"All art is peaceful and relaxing. (My wife) will come in and say, 'It's after dinner,' and the time just flew by," Schneck said.

Schneck swept the competition at the local level when he won first place with his quilt in the original design needlework category. He competed against other local artists for the title in March held at the Raymond G. Murphy Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albuquerque.

By winning the local competition, Schneck was entered into a national competition, where he was awarded gold. He will attend the awards ceremony in Rogers and Fayetteville, Ark., for the week-long 2011 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival in October, hosted by the Veterans Health Care System of Ozarks.

This same quilt also won second place at the New Mexico State Fair quilting section last year.
