Unfolding stories: Local guild promotes culture of quilting

The unfolding of each quilt tells a different story during show and tell at the Midland Quilters Guild's monthly meetings. Some of the women have made the cloth masterpieces themselves; others bring childhood blankets that now hold precious memories of a great-grandmother or aunt. As the colors and patterns are unveiled to a room of eager friends, a supportive "How cute!" can be heard almost in unison.

The quilters guild was founded in 1979 by Jean Roberts, who remains an active member. Roberts heard an instructor talk about a group she met with each month to share quilting ideas, and passed around a sheet of paper to see if anyone else might be interested in a similar group in Midland.

"After I started quilting, I wanted to meet other people doing that," Roberts said. Roberts began quilting after her now 57-year-old daughter was born, and taught classes at Midland College and quilting shops throughout the years.

There were 24 women at the guild's first meeting; the group's membership now is more than 140. The guild is divided into two chapters: one that meets at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month and the other that meets at 1 p.m. the following Wednesday. Meetings are held at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, are open to the public and free of charge.

The group serves mainly as a place to share ideas, learn and form friendships with others who share the same interest in quilting. Instructors and quilters from around the state and country visit to give inspiration and new ideas to members during monthly gatherings.

Charlotte Massey — whose mother, Elouise May, is one of the three remaining charter members active in the group — remembers the day Roberts passed around the guild's first sign-up sheet. It was the same year Massey made her first quilt.

"My brother and his wife were expecting a baby, so I made the baby a quilt," said Massey, who edits the group's monthly newsletter. Many members recalled having picked up quilting as a hobby around the time their first child was born. The hobby has turned into a selfless one for many, as well, as enthusiasts create quilts for others in their families or communities.
