Pa. lawmaker calls for investigation into 'Zogbygate'

A Pennsylvania lawmaker is calling for an investigation into the actions of a state trooper assigned to Gov. Tom Corbett's security detail.

State Rep. Bill DeWeese accused the on-duty trooper of using state resources July 10 when he left his post at the Governor's Mansion to drive home the wife of Budget Secretary Charles Zogby from the Cumberland County Prison. Georgina Zogby had been arrested on charges she was driving drunk when she tried to flee from another state trooper.

DeWeese, the former House Speaker charged with theft in Corbett's public corruption investigation as attorney general, accused Corbett of having a double standard for not investigating "Zogbygate" with the same zeal as Bonusgate.

"Attorney General Corbett came after 25 people, members, former members, and staff," DeWeese said. "Many, many, many of the charges were theft by unlawful taking. Sounds like a police car in the middle of the night."

In a letter requesting an investigation to Attorney General Linda Kelly, DeWeese wrote that "a commonwealth employee using a commonwealth vehicle to pick up the wife of a high-ranking government official who works directly for the governor should sound delicious to our commonwealth's top prosecutor and her public corruption unit."

To State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan, DeWeese wrote that he "cannot believe that a state trooper would abandon his security post without a supervisor's order," and to Inspector General Kenya Mann Faulkner he wrote "how is it that a state police officer can escort home an alleged DUI offender married to one of the governor's closest advisors, but yet a stranded motorist cannot get the same level of assistance?"

State police spokesman Sgt. Anthony Manetta has said that Georgina Zogby called the Governor's Office after she was processed at the prison, and the early morning phone call transferred to the Governor's Residence where the trooper answered it. He said Corbett was in Pittsburgh, and the trooper acted on his own. He insisted that Zogby did not get preferential treatment.
