Bug strikes EHS varsity and JV teams, forcing game to be canceled

Elyria High athletic director Darren Conley confirmed that 38 of the 86 players that make up the pioneers Varsity and Junior Varsity lists fell ill shortly after arriving at school on Friday. Symptoms of a player were so severe, he went directly to the emergency room EMH Medical Treatment Centre.

"We have suffered a widespread disease in our team," said Conley. "The players were vomiting and diarrhea.

"It is being studied by both the hospital and the Ministry of Health (Elyria)."

Conley said the source of the disease was unclear, although many believed that centered around potluck team led by the parents of the players Thursday night at Ely Stadium.

"Yeah, it was something we ate because we all ate together," said Pioneer senior Dustin quart Stolarski, who was one of 38 patients. "We do not know what happened, half the team sick. We just know it's some kind of stomach thing. Everyone feels terrible."

Stolarski said the players were eating spaghetti, a plate of noodles and salads.The salad may be the culprit, as coach Kevin Fell Elyria also felt in the morning on Friday and Tim Alcorn Wol patient says he only ate a salad for dinner.

Phyllis J. Molnar, a registered dietitian and is a nutrition consultant in the Elyria Health District, said that the symptoms point to a possibly food poisoning. One possible culprit could be salmonella, according to Molnar.

"If the football team has a salmonella food poisoning, the symptoms are more severe and flu-like diarrhea, vomiting and fever," she said in an email."Symptoms usually appear 12 to 36 hours after eating and can last from two to seven days."

The team hopes for fewer, as the Pioneers have rescheduled the game for 14 hours Sunday in Strongsville.

The Pioneers are from 3-0 and need as many points as they can accumulate for a chance at their second trip to the Division I playoffs.

Instead of recognizing their humanity and unleashing their potential, this system has criminalized them—with one in nine young Black men locked down in prison, and with Black and Latino youth having to face harassment, brutality, and the constant threat of death at the hands of the police whenever they walk out the door. Meanwhile the apple-pie racism of America festers and often boils over, in forms old and new.
