PRESIDENT SPEAKS IN OSAWATOMIE Its not every day that the president of the United States makes a speech in Miami County. In fact, it seems to be about once every century. The announcement that President Barack Obama would be making an important policy speech at Osawatomie High School on Dec. 6 sent hundreds of local residents scrambling to acquire tickets to the event. Many waited in long lines just to get a chance to get a ticket, and some with tickets were denied entrance once the gymnasium filled to capacity. The last time a president created such a stir in Miami County was 1910, and Theodore Roosevelt was giving his New Nationalism speech at John Brown Memorial Park. Obama echoed many of the same political sentiments during his speech, which focused on creating social equality by raising taxes for the wealthiest Americans and investing in the countrys education system, as well as using government regulation to make sure everyone plays by the same rules. Osawatomie, this is not just another political debate, Obama said. This is the defining issue of our time. This is a make-or-break moment for the middle class. Many of those who werent lucky enough to be one of the more than 1,000 people who got to hear the speech in person lined the streets outside the gymnasium and waved to the presidential motorcade as it arrived and departed from the school. A small group of Miami County residents also happened to be lucky enough to be allowed inside the We B Smokin barbecue restaurant at the Miami County Airport when President Obama stopped in for a quick to-go order before boarding the Marine One helicopter. Obama and his entourage of security personnel enjoyed some beef, pork, turkey and ham, along with two bottles of sauce. He paid cash.
