WONDERCON Moving to Anaheim; C2E2 2012 Dates Announced
WonderCon, one of Comic-Con International's three annual shows, is moving to Anaheim for its 2012 event, to be held March 16 to 18.
A change of venue had been rumored for months, as the convention's traditional home of the Moscone Center in San Francisco will be in the midst of renovations early next year. As a result of the move, Chicago's C2E2, which was held that weekend in March this year, will be held April 13 to 15 in 2012.
Additionally, Comic-Con's release states that Wizard World is "postponing" their April 2012 show. The company also recently postponed a Los Angeles convention scheduled for September, with no make-up date announced yet. Last month, the Anaheim Convention Center hosted Disney's D23 Expo.
WonderCon was first held in 1987, and has been in the Bay Area each year up until this point, first at the Oakland Convention Center before moving to the Moscone Center in 2003. It's grown steadily in importance for movie and TV studios as well as comic book publishers in recent years, and is the sister convention of the massive Comic-Con International: San Diego and Alternative Press Expo, held this year on Oct. 1 and 2 at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco.

The news is not yet reflected on the show's official site but the Hollywood Reporter says the next event will take place March 16-18. "Rumblings on comic sites whispered the move in the week after Comic-Con when it was revealed that San Francisco’s Moscone Center, WonderCon’s traditional venue, would be undergoing renovations in early 2012," writes THR. “It certainly was not our wish to move,” said CCI’s director of marketing David Glanzer in a statement. “However, when faced with the prospect of canceling the show for a year or moving locations, after careful consideration we decided to keep WonderCon on the 2012 calendar at a venue that could accommodate our needs.” There's just one problem with the new date. It conflicts with dates ReedPop's C2E2 show in Chicago was likely to use as well as veers very close to Wizard World's own Anaheim show in April. Comic-Con International said, “ReedPop’s C2E2, which has been waiting to announce dates for its own show in March 2012, will now seek alternative dates while Wizard World has announced that it will postpone its April 2012 Anaheim show.”
This is terrible news. I have been going to WonderCon since I was a kid, back when it was in Oakland. Last year I decided to finally go all three days because it was something me and my late father always talked about. I am so glad I went last year now. The bay area is in need of a convention, they are not getting a fair shake in all of this. There are many other bay area locations they could have tried, I am really disappointed in WonderCon right now.
