Comedic Duet Skits
Retro-skitted show launches new Shadowbox
Like all Shadowbox Live theme shows, Legacy is designed to leave patrons laughing and tapping their toes. But longtime fans may start the evening off with a lump in their throat.
This first show in Shadowbox's new Brewery District space begins with the Joe Cocker version of "With a Little Help From My Friends." Singing it is a line of both known and unknown performers-and one who looks more than vaguely familiar.
Veteran patrons will recognize her as Stacie Boord, who headed south in 2001 to launch the troupe's Cincinnati offshoot. Seeing her back on a Columbus stage following that club's recent demise gives added poignancy to Shadowbox's new venture.
Not only is the company returning Downtown after all those years at Easton--and taking a big financial risk in the process--but it's doing it with one of its pioneering members back in the fold. With a little help from my friends, indeed.
And Boord's reappearance is just the beginning of the evening's nostalgia trip. The entire Legacy lineup consists of skits and songs from earlier Shadowbox shows-sometimes much earlier.
Some of the best returning skits:
Bad Boys , an overdone soap-opera spoof that wasn't funny when it first appeared in 2002. The only consolation is that it gives Boord a chance to prove she didn't let her upstaging skills go to seed during her years on the Ohio River.Among the songs, the nostalgic favorite is the bluesy "Ball and Chain." That's because it not only features Boord's well-honed voice, but it's a repeat from a show at 2Co's, the quieter Shadowbox spin-off that briefly classed up the Short North. (Those pining for more 2Co's-style material will get their wish when Killer Blues, a weekly 2Co's-style show, opens Sept. 21.)
Two other numbers benefit from the contributions of additional refugees from the Cincy Shadowbox. Drummer Brandon Smith shares a duet with Matt "The Beast" Buchwalter on the instrumental "Frankenstein"; and Leah Haviland sings the hell out of Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana.
