Saltgrass Steak House
A member of our staff recently had friends from New York visit Laughlin for a bit of fun in the sun and a Nevada casino vacation without the Vegas push and shove. When it came time during one of the early evenings for a cocktail rendezvous they decided on the small bar area of the Saltgrass Steak House within the Golden Nugget. Good choice. Not only was the atmosphere and energy level on spot, the specials of the "Happy Hour" were indeed special (see inset on facing page). The Saltgrass is a restaurant that bills itself as “Texas to the Bone” and it has a history to prove it. Without going into the entire cattle drive, the name of the restaurant comes from a cattle trail in east Texas, leading from the Hill Country to the saltgrass lowlands east of Houston. A little steak house sprang up along that trail and became a well-known place for Texans to get good steaks and good food—made from scratch. Landry’s expanded the Saltgrass Steak House through more outlets, mostly in Texas, and began modernizing some aspects of the chain. What they didn't touch was the recipes and tradition of making everything from scratch on the premises of each outlet (as an example, this includes baking the trademark Shiner Bock beer bread each day as well as the baking of the buns for the hamburgers and croutons for the salads). Sampling: We’ve tried many different items at many different times in this restaurant and concluded it’s tough to go wrong here. While the 100% Angus tag is good for billing, we have found in our dining experiences it doesn't always equate to a great steak. However, the Saltgrass Angus tag works as billed—the steaks are exceptional. The only negatives we've experienced in all of our visits were a one-time over-salted steak and bland crab cakes.
