"I work every day, and I enjoy it. We didn't go to the beach or the mountains. My bed's better than any in a hotel," the Alturas citrus grower said.

Young has built a large family citrus business, Peace Valley Enterprises, by tending his own groves and those of many others in South Polk County.

But he is almost more famous for his barn, which becomes a dance floor and entertainment venue when the antique cars and generators are moved out and tools on the walls are covered. Charities and politicians from both parties have used it, and he said he's never charged them a cent.

Leland Kenneth Young was born Sept. 21, 1931, in Falco, Ala., almost due north of Crestview. He was 3 when the family moved to Florida.

"My daddy made moonshine," Young said, with what friends say is his typical candor. "My granddaddy ran a still, too, but he paid the sheriff. My daddy didn't pay. The sheriff tore up his still, and so we came to Florida in 1934 and settled in West Lake Wales.

"Daddy labored in groves all the time, first plowing with a team of mules. He later managed a picking crew for Pasco Packing, and I did, too, later."

Young people worked in the grocery store to Denham in Bartow during high school and after graduating from Summerlin Institute in 1949, he went to work for Bartow Ford.

"I loved working there, and I love the sale. I'm still working for Ernest Smith (Bartow Ford founder) after 61 years. I take care of their groves," he said.
