For the short-term, GreenCell is developing methods and technologies that will significantly cut the cost of materials for oxygen sensors and the company believes that this technology will also have other automotive related applications. GreenCell believes thesclean tech technology will be available for licensing within the next 2 years. . For the long-term, GreenCell intends to develop both energy-efficient and environmentally friendly fuel cell technologies that will address the two major problems currently facing the fuel cell industry: 1) Cost (as fuel cells use expensive platinum conductors) and 2) durability. Specifically, GreenCell is developing proprietary ceramic conductive layers that will replace expensive platinum conductors. Using such an approach will be a cost breakthrough for fuel cell makers like FCEL, PLUG, BLDP and QTWW and help the industry to deliver exponential growth over the next few decades while GreenCell itself expects that they will be able to generate commercial revenue from fuel cells within the next 4 to 6 years.Why Fuel Cell Makers Need an Alternative to Platinum Components
To better understand GreenCell’s long-term potential, its important to have an understanding about platinum. For starters, platinum is more of an industrial metal and its worth noting that vehicle catalytic converters account for almost half of all platinum demand. However, platinum is also 30 times rarer than gold but due to a much smaller market, platinum prices are much more volatile. Hence and unlike gold, platinum makes for a poor store of value in volatile or uncertain economic times.
Nevertheless, platinum prices have averaged 1.8 times the price of gold since 2000 but in August, platinum and gold prices stood roughly at parity. This had some analysts predicting a possible rally for platinum prices but as the global economy looks increasingly shaky as we move into September, its unlikely that demand will cause a platinum price spike in the short-term.
