Burglars breaking car windows in Alton, police say

ALTON - Burglars continue hitting cars in Alton, whether locked or not, and sometimes smashing windows to get inside.

At least two of the recent burglaries happened to bicyclists from Missouri at public parking lots.

A St. Charles man told Alton police that while he was on a bike ride between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. Nov. 25, a burglar broke into his locked, white Mazda Protege. The car was parked on the south side of the lot at 1 Lock and Dam Way.

According to an Alton police report, the burglar damaged the Mazda's front, driver's side handle to disable the lock. Once inside the car, the burglar took a pair of black leather gloves worth $30; a Sprint cell phone worth $50; and a wallet containing the man's driver's license, two debit cards, prepaid gift cards and $50 cash.

The report refers to other break-ins at the lot at about that same time but does not give any information on those burglaries.

Another bicyclist from Troy, Mo., was a victim of a car burglar Nov. 24 while his locked 2010 Audi was parked at the south end of the lot at Piasa Park, just off the Great River Road.

That Alton police report says the burglar stole a black, iPod Touch screen valued at $400; a Nike Jordan backpack worth $40 that contained a $100 Nolcom jacket; green Ralph Lauren pants worth $89; and other clothing.

In that incident, the burglar shattered the front passenger window to reach inside and unlock the door.

Alton residents also continue being victims of car burglars, including a resident of the 600 block of Main Street either late Nov. 22 or early Nov. 23.

The burglar broke the driver's side door of a black Pontiac parked in a driveway, then tried unsuccessfully to remove the radio from the dashboard, an Alton police report says.

During that same time period, a burglar broke out the front passenger window of a 1997 Saturn coupe parked in a lot in the first block of Manor Drive. This time, he or she made away with a blue, Dual brand car stereo still in its original box and worth $150, an Alton police report says. The burglar also took a red, Dual brand amplifier worth $200 from the trunk of the car.
