A good first impression
Valentin Hernandez admits he made his first visit to Omaha with preconceptions that the city was thick on farm fare and thin on high-tech enterprises.
That was six years ago, though, and the Phoenix businessman now calls Omaha his family's "Disneyland." His sons, he said, are outgrowing coastal amusement parks and prefer to spend summer vacations at the College World Series. Hernandez is a huge baseball fan as well, but he's also drawn to Omaha's evolving riverfront and startup-firm climate.
"It's where we plan our trips to now," Hernandez said. "I love going there."
Hernandez's review of the local quality of life and landscape has particular meaning to Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce folks, as he is in the business of helping sizable companies decide where they're going to situate or expand.
He and a dozen other professional site selection consultants came to the annual summertime Select Tour hosted and paid for by the Greater Omaha Economic Development Partnership Chamber. The participants, about half of them first-time visitors, were treated to the inaugural game of the downtown CWS, on-site visits to big employers and data-filled presentations on what made this a fertile business land.
Feedback from site selectors helps provide an outside professional peek at strengths and weaknesses in the city's business allure.
With the first downtown CWS in the history books and the selectors now returned to their routines, The World-Herald checked in with some to see if the three-day tour in June — the 19th consecutive one — reaped rewards.
At least two consultants said the Omaha-Council Bluffs area remained a candidate for their client to move or expand. One was here to size up the city as a possible data center site, another was looking to locate a warehouse distribution facility.
Two other participants had no specific project in mind when they arrived but have since recommended the Omaha area as a possible new site for a client, said Rod Moseman, vice president of economic development for the chamber. One is interested in an office building, the other a warehouse distribution facility.
