Are textbooks history?
President Barack Obama mentioned it in his State of the Union speech and schools in Ohio and Missouri are doing it, but local districts don't appear ready just yet to abandon traditional textbooks in favor of online-only or digital resources.

For now, concerns such as cost, network security and ensuring equality of access are holding back wider implementation, but several pilot efforts are under way.
At Meriden's Platt High School, about 40 sophomores and juniors in Geoffrey Kenyon's advanced placement U.S. history classes will receive Apple iPad 2 tablet computers for use in class and at home.
Kenyon, who is starting his ninth year as a teacher, said the technology will allow students to engage with the material outside of the 45-minute class sessions, do their own research and collaborate on projects.
"There's a huge amount of material," he said of the course, which meets in two sections and covers from before Columbus to the present day. "This will allow them to communicate with me and each other outside of class."
The district paid $538 per iPad, because of educator and bulk purchase discounts, but still bought a new textbook for the course this year at a cost of $68 per soft cover, for students receiving an iPad, and $124 per hardcover.
Kenyon said he and his counterpart at Maloney High School picked a book that has an electronic version, but the version requires Flash, which isn't compatible with the iPad. There is supplemental digital content available online, however.
Kenyon also said the costs weren't substantially different between the printed and digital versions.
