Owens says 2012 funding for new customs facility “unclear”
Alexandria Bay - Construction of a new, larger facility port of entry on Wellesley Island - a proposed $ 173 million that was included in the Obama administration proposed 2012 budget - is "uncertain" at this stage according to Rep. William L. Owens.
"It was included in the budget, but has not been implemented to date. This has not gone through the appropriations process. We also have other questions, there are new rules in the House . Various appropriation bills are now the limits associated with them. It is unclear whether or not what is going to get funded, "Mr.Owens, D-Plattsburgh, said Tuesday after meeting with the border authorities of the island.
The meeting was closed to the press, but Mr. Owens said the group discussed what areas U.S. Customs and Border Protection needs to focus on how the office of member of Congress can help the Customs and Revenue Agency if the drones can be integrated into the process of strengthening border patrol, among other issues.
For years, a thousand Islands Bridge Authority officials have insisted that the inspection lanes were required to Wellesley Island crossing with increased security measures implemented since the terrorist attacks of 9-11.
U.S. Customs has increased its staff in Wellesley Island over the past year to keep all channels open, but the backups still forcing border Canadian visitors and U.S. citizens entering the country to wait as long as two hours on weekends summer.
"Clearly, we try to ensure that we can get the speed border stations.We monitor the dwell time at border crossings on a quarterly basis to try to ensure that we do not see the tips. You'll see some spikes normal course in the summer with more traffic coming in the tourist area, "said Owens." But we monitor it and hopefully improve treatment and physical facilities to as many border crossings as we can in the neighborhood.

Alexandria Bay, New York (AP) - Police say a man in California died after being struck by a boat while swimming between islands in Alexandria Bay.
Watertown Daily News reports that Peter Hendley Hayward, near Oakland, was swimming in Grenell Island Murray Island on Tuesday afternoon in the bay of Lake Ontario. It was towing a small buoy to make it more visible, but police said steady winds, sheep and glare of the sun may have been hard to see.
A 24-foot boat piloted by Thomas Kernan hit Hendley 66 years or 2:30 p.m.He was pulled aboard the boat and taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Hendley was swimming alone, as he often did.
Police said no charges are expected.
